TMJ problems are actually a collection of disorders relating to the complex jaw joint. If your jaw clicks when you open it as you eat or speak, you may very well be suffering with TMJ. TMJ problems can develop when you clench or grind your teeth, or tighten your jaw muscles, stressing the jaw joint. Some patients have a damaged jaw from an injury or disease. When jaw problems are present, the patient can have a misaligned bite, or have pain, clicking or grating noises when you open your mouth. Patients may also have trouble opening their mouth wide. TMJ can contribute to stiff muscles around your jaws, and frequent headaches and neck aches. If the pain gets worse when you clench your teeth, TMJ may well be the culprit. If left untreated, TMJ can cause loose or broken teeth. Treatment of TMJ will differ based on the severity of the problem. At our dental practice, our dentists will confirm the diagnosis of TMJ and determine the best way to treat your TMJ problem. The initial goal of the treatment is to relieve the muscle spasm and joint pain. This can be accomplished with a pain reliever, an anti-inflammatory, or a muscle relaxant. Steroid injections directly into the joint can be helpful. Self-care treatments can include resting your jaw, keeping your teeth apart when you’re not swallowing, eating soft foods, applying ice and heat, and exercising your jaw. Stress management techniques or physical therapy can also be helpful. Wearing a night guard, will also keep your teeth apart during sleep to relax the muscles and reduce pain.
